SUBJECT: OHIO POLITICOS INVITED TO SYMPOSIUM

Senators Portman and Brown, Governor Kasich and Justice O’Neill Invited to Learn the Science of Cannabis

(Columbus, Ohio): Ohio politicos, many of whom have expressed concerns about medical marijuana, have been personally invited to learn the science behind it at the Ohio Medical Cannabis Education Symposium on May 31-June 2 at the Sheraton Columbus Hotel at Capitol Square. Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown, Governor John Kasich, Ohio Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill, and all of Ohio’s U.S Representatives have been sent letters encouraging them and/or their staff to audit the upcoming Symposium.

The Symposium will feature three days of intensive and comprehensive instruction on cannabis science. Keynote speakers will be Dr. Dustin Sulak, a pioneer in integrative medicine, and Dr. Ethan Russo, a neurologist who as authored over 50 cannabis-related scientific publications. Topics to be covered include, “Endocannabinoid Physiology,” “Disease Prevention and Public Health,” and “Cannabinoid-opioid Interactions.” This latter topic should be of particular interest, considering the opioid crisis that Ohio’s new medical marijuana program could help alleviate.

“People are asking questions about medical marijuana,” said Cheryl McDaniel, the event organizer. “Often the doctors, nurses and pharmacists don’t know the answers. As we talked with elected officials, we discovered some were more informed than others on factual information about cannabis. That is why we invited politicians to our Symposium. If we’re to have effective healthcare policy, healthcare professionals as well elected officials must be educated.”

Governor Kasich has been openly vocal in his opposition, telling Time Magazine that “medical marijuana has no place in stopping Ohio’s opioid crisis,” despite compelling evidence to the contrary that will be discussed at the Symposium. Although he supports the medicinal use of the plant, Senator Sherrod Brown has stated that there are still “far too many unanswered questions.” Senator Portman claimed that the “science [against] marijuana is clear.” In contrast, Justice O’Neill, a registered nurse, asserted this past weekend that time has come to decriminalize marijuana and use the proceeds to fund mental health services and treat addiction.

SPECIAL NOTE: To arrange an interview with panelists or presenters prior to the symposium, please contact Cheryl McDaniel at 908-433-7142.
